Product Support Information: Ectaco Phrasebook Tutorial

This tutorial assumes:

  • Your device is functioning normally--you aren't experiencing a blank screen or some other malfunction. Look at the 800 or TL-2 support chart, as appropriate.

  • You understand How to Use a Touchscreen Device

To use the phrasebook, you have to find it first. The fastest way to do that is to tap the phrasebook icon on the left vertical icon bar. It's the third one up from the bottom, and it looks like a globe on top of an open book.

Congratulations. You are now in the phrasebook.

Let's try looking up a phrase. There are many ways to do this, including voice. But let's learn one way--the fastest way--for now. We're going to use the stylus, exclusively.

Before we do anything, keep in mind one important fact: the phrasebook is organized via a collapsible outline.

It's anyone's guess where on the outline your phrasebook opened to, the first time. So, let's collapse it from wherever it is.

  • If you see, in the upper left corner, a white arrow pointing down, that means you are at the third level of the outline. Tap that arrow, please.

  • If you see, in the upper left corner, a minus sign, that means you are at the second level of the outline. Tap that minus sign, please.

Now, you should see 9 items on your screen, starting with Basics, Traveling, Hotel, etc. If not, keep tapping in the upper left corner to collapse the outline. To see beyond the 9 items, use the slider on the right of the screen. Drag it down, or tap the down arrow at the bottom of the slider bar. The last item, "Calling for police," should show as number 15.

Let's go back up so we can see the Basics category.

Tap the plus sign, to expand the outline. You should see "1.1 First need phrases" at the top of the list. Let's pick that category by tapping it. Now, pick a phrase by tapping whatever phrase you'd like translated. You can see the translation below the horizontal line that runs across the screen. To hear this spoken, you can tap the speaker icon (in bottom bar, third from right) or push the speaker button (on the keyboard, if you are using an 800).

Pretty cool, huh? We're not done yet.

Let's now change the translation direction. The icon for that is just to the left of the speaker icon, and it has arrows pointing in opposite directions. Tap it, and watch what happens. Unfortunately, this icon is in a different location in the dictionary.
