Product Support Information: Ectaco 800 and TL-2 Dictionary Tutorial

This tutorial assumes:

  • Your device is functioning normally--you aren't experiencing a blank screen or some other malfunction. Look at the 800 or TL-2 support chart, as appropriate.

  • You understand How to Use a Touchscreen Device

To use the dictionary, you have to find it first. The fastest way to do that is to tap the dictionary icon that's at the top of the left vertical icon bar. It looks like an open book with "A" and "B" on it.

Congratulations. You are now in the main dictionary. Let's try looking up a word. Using your keyboard (800) or virtual keyboard (800 or TL-2), type the letter "L" (lower case is fine). Now, look at the list of words below. This list is all of the words that start with L.

Next, keep typing, and watch the list shorten: A-U-N-D. Wait. Do you see your word? There it is, and you haven't typed all the letters yet. Don't bother. We're going to have you--in a moment--just tap on the word "laundry." First, look at what's below that word. The dictionary contains phrases that use the word (not to be confused with the phrasebook).

Now, tap the word "laundry." Wow! Look at all that information. You will see a horizontal bar under the English word and its phonetics. Below that bar is some pretty cool stuff. Look it over for a moment. You can tap the X in the upper right corner to close this screen and go back to the previous one.

Pretty cool, huh? We're not done yet. Let's now change the translation direction. The icon for that is the third one from the left, in the bottom icon tray, and it has arrows pointing in opposite directions. Tap it, and watch what happens. Unfortunately, this icon is in a different location in the dictionary.

If your device has voice in the target language (Spanish does, for instance), the dictionary will speak any word or phrase you tap on in the dictionary--in a synthesized voice. It has a machine sound to it, rather than a human voice. That's in intentional, as voice in the dictionary isn't meant for use in a conversation.. That's not the case with the phrasebook, however.
